2.10.16 Where we stand

Thank you for visiting the Make Snow East Metro website. We are just getting things fired up, so come back for critical new info as the lobbying efforts continue.

The Make Snow East Metro committee was formed back in the spring of 2015 with the encouragement and facilitation of Ramsey County. Under the new head of Parks and Recreation, Jon Oyanagi, Ramsey County reignited the possibility of improving existing assets at Battle Creek Regional Park and developing a new Winter Recreation Area.

The county submitted a bonding proposal to the State of Minnesota asking for $2 million of state funding. The $2 million State Bond request will be matched by $1 million from Ramsey County and $1 million from the community in the form of sponsorships, donations, grants and in-kind contributions.

The committee continued to meet and work through the summer and fall of 2015 and hosted bonding tours of battle creek for the Minnesota Office of Management and Budgeting, the Minnesota House of Representatives and the Minnesota State Senate. These tours included a diverse group of presenters including local non-profits, business owners, high school athletes, coaches and even Olympians.

In January of 2016, Governor Mark Dayton included Battle Creek in his bonding proposal. While this is great news, it is only one third of the equation. Immediately the project has been used as a talking point by Republican leadership.

It is essential that we build support for the bill and spread the word. With support among some key leaders, this is the closest Battle Creek has ever been to gaining the much needed improvements.

Please share this with all who love Battle Creek, nordic skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and winter recreation in general!
